More than 10 people are being prosecuted in connection to the death of football player Mohamed Atwi, according to his family.

In a statement released on Friday, Atwi’s family thanked the authorities for the efforts they’ve made in working on the case.

“More than seven months after the martyrdom of Captain Mohamed Atwi by the bullets of treachery and supremacy over the law and the concept of the state, the killers thought that this heinous crime would pass casually,” the statement said.

“But, they were disappointed, and we had the say and the speech, and here the Military Public Prosecution is prosecuting more than ten defendants before the arc of justice.”

The family thanked security forces and the judicial authorities, in addition to lawyer Hasan Bazzi, “for their efforts to clear the mystery of this case.”

They also pledged to keep following the case until the perpetrators receive “the maximum and harshest punishments.”

In August 2020, Mohamed Atwi, a professional football player, was admitted to intensive care after being struck by a stray bullet fired during the funeral of one of the victims of the Beirut Port explosion.

A few weeks later, Atwi was pronounced dead and mourned by family, friends, colleagues, and fans.
