Lebanon is due for a joint summit with Greece and Cyprus later this year to discuss tourism, caretaker Tourism and Social Affairs Minister Ramzi Moucharafieh said on Monday.

The summit will be held in September and will conclude a series of summits that Lebanon has participated in with the aim of boosting tourism. Its focus will be the activation of tourism among the three countries.

Moucharafieh discussed the upcoming event with President Michel Aoun during a meeting on Monday morning, after which he described tourism as a “glimmer of hope” for Lebanon as it goes through its crippling economic crisis.

The meeting also dwelled on the summit that took place in Saudi Arabia, the bilateral talks with 13 Arab Ministers of Tourism, and the upcoming summit in Egypt at the end of July, according to Moucharafieh.

Moucharafieh hoped that his visit to Egypt will mark the beginning of an agreement to encourage Lebanon’s tourism sector.

As its economy crumbles, Lebanon has been working on reviving its economically crucial tourism sector, which took a hit last year due to the crisis and the pandemic.

One of the steps taken in this direction was increasing flights from Kuwait to Beirut to 6 per week a few days ago.
