People in Lebanon must adhere to preventive measures and get vaccinated to increase readiness in case the new “Lambda” variant of coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads in Lebanon, the Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute (LARI) said on Thursday.
In a statement, LARI said that it is monitoring the new Lambda variant that has started spreading in some countries in South America.
“It might spread, so taking the vaccine is necessary and precautions must be taken strictly because we are still in the multiple waves of coronavirus,” it stressed.
The institute noted that individuals who have been previously infected with COVID-19 or have been vaccinated against it should remain cautious to avoid reinfection.
LARI pointed out that it had warned of the risks associated with the Delta variant before it reached Lebanon, “and here it is now spreading in Lebanon, knowing that the months of August and September will perhaps witness a wider spread of the Delta virus due to popular mixing and the arrival of cases from abroad.”
The approaching flu season may also contribute to the future increase in the number of Delta infections, LARI added.
This statement comes after the head of Lebanon’s National Executive Vaccine Committee warned that Lebanon cannot absorb another COVID-19.
