Lebanese Premiership Issues Notice For August 4 Mourning
Lebanon Debate

The Presidency of the Lebanese Council of Ministers has issued an administrative notice regarding the day of August 4th.

The notice declared “national mourning and the disruption of public administrations, public institutions, and municipalities on the anniversary of the tragic Beirut Port explosion.”

On Wednesday, August 4th, public administrations and institutions, in addition to municipalities, will be closed in memory of the victims of the devastating explosion that tore through Beirut last year.

Flags that are raised over these institutions and administrations will be lowered in mourning, and regular programs on radio and television stations will be modified accordingly.

The aim of these procedures is to express solidarity with those injured in the blast, their families, and the families of the victims who lost their lives, the notice said.

The move comes two weeks after Lebanese President Michel Aoun granted his exceptional approval for declaring the 4th of August a national day of mourning in Lebanon.

Even though nearly a year has gone by since the deadly explosion, there has yet to be accountability for it.

Judge Tarek Bitar, the judicial investigator leading the case, has requested that the immunities of several officials be lifted to enable their questioning.

However, this request has been facing resistance, which is delaying the prosecution phase of the investigation.
