Saudi-French Meetings As Lebanese Army Chief Topping Presidential Candidates List

Al-Mayadeen

With the deadline for electing a Lebanese president edging close, the domestic haggling is being accompanied by European and Arab meetings in Paris, namely between French and Saudi officials.

These meetings are reportedly aiming to ensure Lebanon elects a president that can abide by the Taef Accord and the Lebanese Constitution, and pull the country away from axes.

The recent meeting between France and Saudi Arabia in Paris involved President Macaron’s advisor Patrick Durrell, the head of France’s General Directorate for External Security Bernard Émié, and the French Ambassador to Lebanon Anne Grillo.

Representing Saudi Arabia in the meeting were reportedly the Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Walid Bukhari, the Saudi Royal Court advisor Nizar al-Aloula, and a senior Saudi security official.

Media reports meanwhile said that Lebanese Army chief General Joseph Aoun is emerging as the leading candidate for the Lebanese presidency.
