The Jury of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia awarded the Lebanese artist Ali Cherri with the Silver Lion for The Milk of Dreams International Exhibition.
The prestigious art exhibition, comprised of well-known names in the jury from the USA, Italy, Mexico, Cameroon, and Germany, awarded Cherri for “an interdisciplinary and multilayered presentation that takes a meditation on earth, fire, and water from a constructive perspective to a mythical dimension.”
Born in 1976 in Beirut, and based in Paris, France, Ali Cherri is an artist working in film, video, installation, drawing, and performance.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the American University of Beirut (AUB) and a Master of Performing Arts from DasArts – Academy of Theatre and Dance, in Amsterdam.
Cherri is also the recipient of the Robert E. Fulton Fellowship of Harvard University (2016).
His work was featured in many exhibitions, such as If you prick us do we not bleed? at the National Gallery, London; Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning, at the 13th Gwangju Biennale; The Gatekeepers at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille – Manifesta 13, France; and more.
His films were also screened in International Film Festivals, including CPH: DOX, where he won the NewVision Award; Dubai International Film Festival (winner of Best Director); Berlinale; and Toronto International Film Festival; among others.
