The Army Command issued a statement on Thursday, in which it noted that 34 individuals were arrested for preparing an illegal emigration attempt to Europe by sea.
A patrol from the Intelligence Directorate in the Sarafand and Sidon regions arrested them on June 16th. The group included Syrian and Lebanese nationals, as well as women and children.
The Lebanese Army immediately started an investigation into the matter under the supervision of the judiciary.
Last week, 64 people of Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian nationalities were also arrested for trying to flee the country by sea.
Lebanon has been experiencing a rising number of illegal – sometimes deadly – emigration attempts due to the worsening and deepening economic crisis.
