Employees at MEAB bank were robbed at gunpoint at Beirut’s Airport Road, Al-Jadeed reported on Wednesday.
The employees were on their way to transport 200 million Lebanese pounds from the National Social Security Fund to the bank when the incident took place.
Internal Security Forces Information Branch personnel arrived at the scene shortly afterward and opened an investigation into the incident.
The bank has not commented on the incident as of the time of writing.
As the overall conditions in Lebanon continue to deteriorate under an unprecedented economic crisis, crime has been on the rise across the country.
According to a recent study, thefts increased by more than 160% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.
In the past week alone (June 21-27), the Internal Security Forces arrested 389 people across Lebanon for various crimes.
