Beirut’s Iconic Sunflower Theater Shut Down Over Alleged Environmental Issues

Annahar

Beirut’s municipality police sealed the electricity generator of The Sunflower Theater with red wax, for allegedly lacking environmental standards.

This action has prompted the SHAMS – The Cooperative Cultural Association for Youth in Theatre and Cinema – that runs the theater, to announce its closure.

Lebanese Actor, Fadi Abi Samra, raised the issue on his Facebook page, calling for a nationwide campaign to preserve the theater.

The Caretaker Minister of Culture, Judge Mohammad Mortada, also said on Twitter that The Sunflower Theater is not only a theater but also an outlet where theater students from various universities practice.

He stressed that closing it will lead to disaster and that he will be working with Beirut’s governor to solve the issue of this cultural space.
