Canada is stepping up to support Lebanon’s efforts to stabilize and rebuild South Lebanon, as confirmed by Stefanie McCollum, Canada’s Ambassador to Lebanon, in a recent interview with LBCI.
Welcoming the Lebanese government’s latest plan for stability in the south, McCollum emphasized Canada’s ongoing commitment to the Lebanese Army (LAF). “We have been working extensively with the LAF, providing training, equipment, and capacity building.
We believe they have the capability to secure the south and maintain those borders on behalf of Lebanon in the long term,” she stated.
When discussing the reconstruction of towns devastated in southern Lebanon, Ambassador McCollum expressed Canada’s willingness to assist, while noting that further steps depend on Lebanon’s own plans. “We are keen to see what the Lebanese government has planned for reconstruction. As we have been in the past, we look forward to being a top donor country in supporting these efforts,” she affirmed.
Ambassador McCollum also reiterated Canada’s commitment to the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a ceasefire and lasting peace along the Blue Line, the demarcation between Lebanon and Israel. “A ceasefire is essential to restoring calm along the southern border. We welcome Lebanon’s structured approach to ensuring stability in the south,” she said.
However, the ambassador was clear about the current advice to Canadian citizens in Lebanon. The Canadian Embassy has repeatedly warned its nationals to avoid traveling to Lebanon due to the volatile situation and has urged those already in the country to leave by commercial means. “Since October, our advice has been for Canadians to avoid travel to Lebanon and for those here to depart while they can,” McCollum cautioned.
While Canada is preparing to assist Lebanon, McCollum noted that specific details about the aid plan remain under wraps for security reasons. “We do have a plan, and we hope that we will be able to help,” she indicated.
As the situation in Lebanon continues to unfold, Canada’s support remains crucial, especially as the nation seeks to rebuild and ensure long-term stability in its southern regions.
In May, Canada pledged $65 million in humanitarian assistance and economic development to Lebanon.
