The customs department at the Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport seized 31 kilograms of cocaine. reported Lebanon’s State News Agency, NNA, on Wednesday.
The cocaine was found hidden in a bag with one of the passengers who arrived onboard Ethiopian Airlines from Brazil.
Investigations have been launched at the airport to find out more details about this smuggling operation.
This is not the first time authorities thwart an attempt to smuggle cocaine from Brazil through Ethiopia to Lebanon.
In 2013, on the 2nd of December (which is coincidently the same date), someone tried to smuggle cocaine hidden in his suitcase. That’s just one of many other attempts to bring the drug into Lebanon.
Recently, Lebanese authorities have foiled several smuggling attempts at the Beirut airport. Last month, a young man was caught trying to smuggle 15 kilograms of cannabis hidden in a loudspeaker.
There have also been many attempts of smuggling medicine out of Lebanon. A month ago, there was even a human smuggling attempt. Imagine that.
