On Wednesday, MPs Najat Saliba and Melhem Khalaf inspected a natural cave in Amchit where construction was taken over a cave to which endangered seals resort.

According to the two MPs, such acts had a serious environmental impact.

As a result of follow-ups made by Saliba and Khalaf with Lebanon’s Caretaker Minister of Environment, Nasser Yassin, and other officials, an immediate decision was taken to stop the work at this site in order to preserve the environmental wealth represented by this cave.

Per the Green Southerners, the endangered seals present in the area belong to the “Monachus monachus” species.

The “Monachus monachus” has been listed on the verge of extinction since 1996 and on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s as “Critically Endangered”.
