Last week, President Michel Aoun signed a law that increases public salaries and taxes which the Lebanese Parliament has approved of last month. The tax hikes have been proposed to increase the salaries in the public sector which resulted in many
protests that took place in Beirut
. MP
believes that the increase in the wage scale should not harm the citizens’ financial state. Gemayel and nine lawmakers filed an appeal which was signed by himself and nine MPs, who are: Nadim Gemayel, Samer Saade, Elie Marouni, Fadi Al Haber, Dori Chamoun, Butros Harb, Khaled Al Daher, Fouad Al Saad, and Salim Karam. The Council checked the appeal today. The meeting resulted in the suspension of the tax hikes. In fact, MP Samy Gemayel thanked the Constitutional Council and the MPs who signed the appeal. He also mentioned that the suspension of the tax hikes gave hope in the Lebanese institutions. Also, Gemayel said that this suspension will not affect the wage scale since there are alternative solutions that can solve this problem without affecting the Lebanese people’s financial state. This achievement is a huge step forward since it proved that Lebanese people can hope for a better Lebanon.
