Paris to Host the 5th International Conference on Gibran Khalil Gibran

Immersing in the world of Gibran with fourteen panelists deemed experts on his works and life.

Lebanon's Most Famous Son continues to be a subject of wonder, analysis, and exploration worldwide and at many levels and angles. From the Lebanese town of Bisharri in the northern mountains to the US and spreading his ingeniosity around the world and across times, Gibran Khalil Gibran is still amazing us, long after his passing in New York in 1931. The coming international conference in Paris is one of the indications of that legacy he left to humanity.

This year, the International Conference on Gibran will be held at the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) in Paris, France, on October 3rd, 2019. It is organized by The Center for Lebanese Heritage at the Lebanese American University (LAU - Lebanon) in collaboration with The George and Lisa Zakhem Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values & Peace of the University of Maryland in the United States.

Our Lebanese-American writer, poet, visual artist, and philosopher is probably best known as the author of The Prophet, which was first published in the United States in 1923 and is one of the best-selling books of all time, having been translated into dozens of languages.

Born in the northern mountain village of Bsharri to a Maronite Christian family, the young Gibran immigrated with his mother and siblings to the United States in 1895 where he settled down and unleashed his ingeniosity to the world. That rare ingeniosity is still, to date, a subject of awe and also research, analysis, and exploration worldwide.

The conference is bringing together fourteen panelists from around the world. The panelists have been selected for their involvement in Gibran's creative works and life, whether as critics, analysts, interpreters, translators and so on. They will be presenting their research on the internationally celebrated thinker, as well as their analysis on his complexity from different angles, and shed new light on his life and works.

Each year, following the event, the proceedings and findings of this international conference are published by The George and Lisa Zakhem Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values & Peace (University of Maryland) in close cooperation with The Center for Lebanese Heritage (Lebanese American University). This has been the case for the first four conferences, the first of which took place in 2011.

Dr. May Rihani, Director of the Kahlil Gibran Chair, will open the event alongside Dr. Henri Zoghaib, Director of the Center for Lebanese Heritage. The event is set to feature three panels across four hours titled: The Spirituality of Gibran; Gibran, the Arab World and the Nahda; and Translating Gibran.

The event is open to the public and free of charge. If you reside in Paris or will be in Paris at that time (October 3rd), this is your opportunity to immerse in the world of Gibran Khalil Gibran, our most remarkable Lebanese-native personality who was dubbed "Lebanon's most famous son."

It will take place between 3.00 PM and 7.00 PM at the Institute for the Arab World's premises in Paris.
