Dutch Ambassador’s Wife in Lebanon Just Passed Away following Beirut Explosion

With sadness, the Government of the Netherlands announced the passing of the wife of Dutch ambassador to Lebanon Jan Waltmans, Hedwig Waltmans-Molier.

On Saturday morning, she succumbed to injuries she sustained during the explosion that rocked the city on August 4th. Similar to her husband, she was also a government worker.

According to the statement by the Foreign Ministry office, Hedwig was standing next to her husband in their living room when the blast took place, seriously injuring her.

“Our thoughts are with her husband, their children, and other family members. Our sympathy goes out to them and we wish them every strength to cope with this great loss,” said the Dutch Foreign Ministry.

The blast also caused extensive damage to the Dutch embassy, wounding four people according to Reuters.

The blast has killed over 150 people now and the number is rising as bodies of victims are being dug up out of the rubble and as surviving victims give in to their severe injuries.
