Unfortunately for many of us, the Lebanese summer season might not only be a time for fun but for certain summer diseases as well.
Eye inflammations, for instance, occur repeatedly during this time of the year. Fortunately, there are several effective home remedies that can help you appease the symptoms.
Salt Water
Saltwater has the same effect on the eyes as teardrops, making it the best remedy for inflammations or infections since the tears are the eye’s natural way of cleansing itself.
In addition, salt contains antimicrobial properties that impede any pathogen from coming in. Water should be clean, however, meaning that seawater wouldn’t help much in this case!
Tea Bags
Much more than a way to relax, placing tea bags under your eyes can be an effective way to treat eye irritation or inflammation. It also removes the pain and the swelling caused by an eye infection, making it treatable.
The types of tea most commonly used to treat inflammation or the swelling caused by an infection are green tea, black tea, and chamomile.
Warm Compresses
A warm compress in the region of the eyes can help treat dryness, pain, and inflammation. The compress also reduces swelling and hydrates the eyes.
As in the case of tea bags, a warm compress cannot cure an infection but it does alleviate the symptoms, giving you relief and the time to consult a doctor.
Cold Compresses
Even though it may seem contradictory, applying a compress of cold water to the eye has about the same effect as that of hot water. It eliminates swelling, pain, and inflammation, and reduces the pain caused by infection.
Be careful not to press it too hard on the eyes. Applying ice directly is also not recommended.
Honey
Even though there are not many studies relating to honey with eye health and prevention of diseases, it was found so far that honey has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which could make it an effective home remedy for a variety of eye ailments.
