Fact Check: Is Fairouz COVID-19 positive?

Soazig de la Moissonniere / Présidence de la République

News attributed to the National News Agency (NNA) circulated on WhatsApp groups on Wednesday stating that the 85-year-old iconic singer Fairouz has tested positive for COVID-19.

It was reported that her daughter Rima Rahbani announced that her mother is doing well and that her symptoms are normal. It was also reported that she is quarantining at home.

This news comes after the passing of beloved Elias Rahbani, who succumbed to COVID-19, and after Fairouz paid tribute to the late composer.

Claim: Caretaker Minister of Health Hamad Hassan has informed the public that Fairouz has contracted the coronavirus.

Verdict: Fake news. Fairouz is well and fine!

Context: In response to the news, NNA made it clear that the news is completely untrue and that it had nothing to do with the spreading rumors which were attributed to its media agency.

It is not the first time rumors about Fairouz spread like wildfire. In May 2020, someone has terribly claimed that the Lebanese icon had passed away sending panic across the country.

Apparently, false information like this spreads almost every year. However, fortunately, Lebanon’s most loved singer is fine.
