Families of the Beirut Blast victims filed a lawsuit against two former ministers of Hassan Diab’s government, Ghazi Zeaiter and Ali Hassan Khalil, under the charges of abusing their defense’s rights and status.
The lawsuit is also about their obstruction of the investigation, which has been suspended following their lawsuits and multiple others by political officials against the head of the investigation Judge Tarek Bitar.
Judge Bitar has been the target of politicians seeking to stop his investigation by forcing his removal, like in the case of his predecessor Judge Fadi Sawan who was removed by the Court of Cassation.
In their lawsuit, the families of the victims are also demanding damage compensation equivalent to 100 billion LBP.
The Beirut Blast of August 4th, 2020 killed over 234 innocent people and wounded thousands, some of whom are maimed for life. The families persist in their demands for justice and are regularly staging demonstrations in front of the crime scene; the Beirut port.
It hasn’t made it any easy on them that the government voted last week for the demolition of Beirut’s port silos at the crime scene and granted a French company a contract to rebuild the port.
