Hussein al-Husseini, the former Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.
Husseini was one of the founders of the Amal Movement and played a key role in brokering the Taif Agreement, which brought an end to the Lebanese Civil War in 1990.
In 1984, Al-Husseini was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament and held this position until 1992. Nabih Berri took his place right after and has held the position ever since.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati issued a statement on the passing of Al-Husseini, saying “Today Lebanon has lost an authentic national and constitutional stature.”
He went on to say that Al-Husseini’s presence and leadership was a significant milestone in the history of parliamentary work in Lebanon.
Tomorrow’s parliamentary session to elect a president has been postponed by Berri over the news of his passing.
