The International Support Group for Lebanon (ISG) released a statement on Wednesday calling for the election of a Lebanese president that can unite the people.
The ISG stressed on a president that can work with regional and international actors to “overcome the economic and humanitarian crisis for the greater public good, and emphasized the importance of implementing economic reforms required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
The Lebanese government is required to implement economic reforms to gain a multi-billion-dollar loan from the IMF, as agreed upon in April for a financial aid package for Lebanon.
However, as noted by the ISG, there has been “insufficient progress in the implementation of the commitments made under the staff-level agreement.”
The ISG also stressed the importance of electing a new president within the timeframe set by the Lebanese Constitution.
The statement indicated “the lack of progress so far in the judicial proceedings in connection with the Beirut port explosion.”
It called on Lebanese authorities to do all they can to “unblock any hurdles to the completion of an impartial, thorough and transparent investigation.” It further stressed that “the families of the victims and the Lebanese people deserve truth and justice without further delay.”
The ISG concluded its statement by saying, “It is incumbent on Lebanese leadership to deliver for the people and return Lebanon to a path of sustainability and progress […]. Ultimately, it is a matter of accountability towards the citizens of Lebanon and of rebuilding their confidence in the Lebanese state.”
