Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen has alerted the United Nations Security Council about the rising risk of a regional conflict.
This warning comes in light of the failure to fully enforce the 2006 UN Resolution 1701, which demands the disarmament of Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Cohen emphasized the urgency for a new strategy to address Hezbollah’s ongoing violations along the border, highlighting the need for regional stability and the prevention of further escalation.
The resolution, which was instrumental in ending the Second Lebanon War, mandates the disarmament of all non-state armed groups in Lebanon and specifies that only the Lebanese army and the UN’s peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, should be present in the area between the Lebanon-Israel border and the Litani River.
