Big news for anyone who gets stuck in traffic on the Jounieh highway: the road is finally set for a major upgrade.
MP Sagih Atieh, head of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Works, Energy, and Water, announced that the Ministry of Public Works has secured nearly $40 million to widen the highway and cover land acquisitions.
According to the team, work starts in less than a month at Beirut’s northern entrance.
Atieh called it a “historic achievement at the right time,” noting to 961 just how much the highway’s daily traffic jams have frustrated commuters.
Other infrastructure projects were also discussed, including the Qlayaat Airport tender, ongoing work at Jounieh Marina to accommodate the upcoming Lebanon-Cyprus maritime route, and the Chekka highway, which is on track to finish by the end of the year.
There are also plans to introduce another 130 public buses to the network.
Road safety is also getting attention. Traffic signs will be updated by September, and the committee plans to coordinate with the Interior Ministry on new measures to reduce accidents.
