Meet The Multidisciplinary Lebanese Designer Inspired By Psychedelic Culture

Khaled El Mays

Founder of Atelier Khaled El Mays in Beirut, Khaled El Mays has been creating “out-of-this-world” art, focusing on multiplicity and repetition, especially infused by mutation.

He is an Architecture graduate of the American University of Beirut (AUB), holder of an MFA in digital arts from New York’s Pratt Institute, and a lecturer and professor at the Lebanese University (LU).

The outcome of his art is based on the intensity of purity and balance in the realm of visual data.

His multi-disciplinary design studio focuses on furniture design, interior architecture, and graphics.

As to keep “community consciousness” alive, his works are produced with the work of craftsmen in the Bekaa Valley and are deeply influenced by the organic use of natural materials such as wicker, leather, and thread.

In 2013, the Lebanese designer launched his first collection, RHIZOMES, which was inspired by the biological branch infused by the colors, repetition, and nostalgia of nature and the philosophical aspects of the color palette he used.

El Mays is currently turning heads at the leading Milan Design Week 2022 with his jungle-like psychedelic-inspired designs.
