The World Association of News Publishers, or WAN-IFRA, announced the annual Editorial Leadership Award to recognize the contributions of editors to their newsrooms and their media’s contribution to society.
Each laureate is selected by members of the Women in News Global Steering Committee and based on several criteria, such as commitment to editorial, gender equality, and also supporting the media leaders’ next generation.
Along with the 2022 Laureates coming from the Philippines and Zimbabwe, Lebanon was also present in the prestigious award ceremony.
Lebanese Diana Moukalled was awarded the Editorial Leadership Award and was announced as the 2022 Laureate for the Arab Region.
Diana Moukalled is the co-founder of Daraj Media, an independent media outlet addressing many of the region’s controversial issues.
The Lebanese journalist, documentary producer, and director has been working in the media industry for almost 30 years, covering conflicts in Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen.
She filmed more than 50 hours of documentaries highlighting socio-political issues in the MENA region and around the world.
“I am deeply touched by this award. It’s an acknowledgment that goes beyond individuals to highlight the challenges journalists in general and women journalists in particular face,” said Moukalled.
Since 1948, the World Association of News Publishers – or WAN-IFRA – has become a global organization aiming at protecting the rights of journalists and publishers as well as promoting press freedom.
