Former information minister convicted of smuggling explosives and planning attacks had a jail sentence of 13 years. However, in Lebanon, a prison year is equivalent to 9 months.
Samaha was detained in August 2012 and sentenced in 2015. This latest sentence was for his suspected motivations.
The Justice Minister at the time, Ashraf Rifi, described the shorter sentence as a travesty of justice.
Samaha was one of many Pro-Syrian Lebanese officials who got sanctioned in 2007 by the US for “Contributing to Political and Economic Instability in Lebanon.”
Samaha will be released from jail on Wednesday, August 3rd, after 10 years of prison.
