Lebanese Parliament Just Failed To Elect A President For The 5th Time

The Lebanese Parliament today, September 16, in its session discussing the country’s budget for 2022, agreed to triple the salaries of public sector employees, including soldiers, retirees, and contractors, as part of social assistance.

The presidential election scheduled for today has failed to elect a Lebanese president for the fifth time due to a lack of quorum in the second round.

The session’s results are as follows:

  • MP Michel Mouawad: 44 votes
  • White ballots: 47 votes
  • “New Lebanon”: 7 votes
  • Issam Khalifeh: 6 votes
  • Ziad Baroud: 1 vote
  • Ziad Hayek: 1 vote
  • “For Lebanon” 1 vote
  • 1 cancelled vote
  • Total voters: 108 deputies.

Lebanon’s parliament speaker Nabih Berri then adjourned the next session for November 17, 2022.
