The General Directorate of Public Security in Lebanon announced on Thursday the launch of an online platform to facilitate appointments related to the Lebanese passport, for Lebanese citizens in Lebanon and abroad.
The platform allows the citizen to take an appointment to renew a passport or to request a new one.
Severe electricity power outages and fuel crises have forced many Lebanese to wait for hours overnight to apply and/or receive their passport.
Requests for a passport to leave the country have increased exponentially in recent times due to the socio-economic crisis that is further enabled by a deadlock at the political stage.
The impact on the population has been tremendous, causing massive brain drain as many have been leaving for job opportunities in other countries.
In early 2021, the number of passport applications rose sharply from 300 to 7,000 applications per day.
“7,000 and 8,000 passports are being applied for daily, and every day, we are short on 5,000 passports,” General Security Chief Major General Abbas Ibrahim said last year.
To submit an application, or for more information about the new platform, visit gs-appt.gov.lb.
Note that the Lebanese General Security Directorate has suspended issuing 5-year biometric passports for adults until further notice.
