Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced, on Monday, that the government has attained advanced steps with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help the country face its economic and financial crises.

Mikati stated that the negotiations are continuing and that “we are on the right path.”

His statements came during a consultative and participatory meeting with representatives of the production forces, to discuss the economic and the social situations, in addition to the current crises.

The IMF had announced on November 4th the start of preliminary talks with Lebanon in order to open international aid after the Lebanese government requested it.

In May 2020, Lebanon started negotiations with the IMF on a rescue plan, but they were stopped in August of the same year, and started again in early November 2021, after the formation of Mikati’s government.

Lebanon seeks to receive financial aid as it deals with one of the world’s worst crises since the mid-nineteenth century, as the World Bank declared it.

The United Nations introduced a response plan for Lebanon, back in August, which mainly aims to provide help and support to the most vulnerable people.
