The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, is facing backlash after a Tweet thanking Hezbollah after their discussion.
Wronecka tweeted, in English and Arabic, personally thanking “Mr. Ammar Moussawi of Hizbullah for a tour d’horizon on issues of priority for Lebanon, including the election of a new President, the functioning of state institutions and the impact of regional and international developments on the country.”
The tweets, which were seen over 85,000 times, have received backlash from many Lebanese calling her out for meeting with Hezbollah.
Over 65 countries and entities have designated the Iranian-backed Hezbollah as a terrorist organization to various degrees.
One Twitter user brought up the killing of the Irish UNIFIL peacekeeper in a Hezbollah-controlled area last month.
Another user called out their role in hindering the investigation into the Beirut Port explosion.
Others brought up narco-terrorism activities including smuggling and assassinations. Last year, 2 Hezbollah operatives were convicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The illegal weapons of Hezbollah were also brought up. Calling on the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1701 and 1559 to be enforced.
Resolution 1701, which was unanimously approved by the UN Security Council and the Lebanese cabinet, calls for the disarmament of all armed groups aside from the Lebanese Army. On November 29th, 2022, Wronecka briefed the Security Council on the implementation of this resolution.
Resolution 1559 calls for Lebanon to establish its sovereignty over its land, and called on all militias in Lebanon, Lebanese and otherwise, to disband and disarm.
The sarcastic comments reference the IRGC, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which created Hezbollah and dozens of similar proxies across the region to serve the Iranian regime’s geopolitical agenda.
