The price of bread in Lebanon has been raised again, the Economy Ministry announced in a statement on Friday.

According to the decision, the official price of bread is now as follows:

  • From the bakery to the consumer:
    • 3,750 Lebanese pounds, at the most, for a large bundle of bread weighing no less than 876 grams.
    • 2,500 Lebanese pounds, at the most, for a medium-sized bundle of bread weighing no less than 390 grams.
  • From the store to the consumer:
    • 4,000 Lebanese pounds, at the most, for a large bundle of bread weighing no less than 876 grams.
    • 2,750 Lebanese pounds, at the most, for a medium-sized bundle of bread weighing no less than 390 grams.

In the announcement, the Economy Ministry cited the recent increase in local fuel prices and the increase in the shipping cost of flour, both from mills to bakeries and from bakeries to selling points.

It also cited the price of wheat on the international market and the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar to the Lebanese pound, not to mention a study conducted by the Ministry to determine the number of ingredients required to produce the best-quality Lebanese bread.

Another factor that contributed to the new price increase, the Ministry said, is the Lebanese central bank‘s recent decision to lift the subsidy of sugar and yeast.

The decision also takes into consideration the difficult economic conditions and the low purchasing power of the population, according to the Ministry.
