On June 15th, the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) released the 16th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) for 2022, where Lebanon ranked 14th in the MENA region and 138th globally.
Lebanon increased by 9 ranks from its previous 147th place globally and by 1 rank in the MENA region from its previous 15th place.
The IEP used 23 GPI indicators such as political instability and violent crime to measure the state of peace of a country.
The article revealed that “Peacefulness decline[d] to lowest level in 15 years fuelled by post-Covid economic uncertainty and Ukraine conflict.”
Iceland kept its title of the most peaceful country in the world since 2008 and Afghanistan as the least peaceful country for the fifth time in a row.
The MENA region remained the least peaceful region in the world despite witnessing its biggest improvement since 2008 with 12 out of 20 countries improving their peacefulness.
Qatar ranked 1st in the MENA region while Yemen replaced Syria to become the least peaceful country in the MENA region and held the 20th place.
