A man tried to set himself on fire in front of a building, initially believed to be the building of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), in Beirut’s neighborhood of Bir Hassan before passers-by extinguished the flames.

LBCI said the man’s identity is still unknown. The reasons for his action and reports about his health and mental conditions are still currently unavailable.

The administration of the National Social Security Fund later said that the incident actually took place in front of a building belonging to an international organization where a number of displaced Syrians have been gathering for a while to demand their deportation and that it has no relationship with this news

The administration also emphasized on the media and social networking sites to clarify the news and not include the name of the National Social Security Fund in this matter, “due to the negative impact it has on the citizens present in the fund centers to complete their transactions”.

The NSSF is rumored to have gone bankrupt and has not been giving employees their pensions, dues, or funds for a while now.

Multiple cases of suicide have been reported in Lebanon, with financial difficulties believed to be the motivating factor.
