PM Mikati Rejected Promotion Of Four Lebanese Officers

Four officers from the General Directorate of Customs were denied the due promotion on August 1, while the rest of the officers in the security, military, and other corps received theirs.

According to MTV, it was found that promotions to the rank of first lieutenant or captain would have included a Druze officer who is the only Druze officer in customs, a Maronite Christian officer, and two Shiite officers.

The Customs Directorate submitted a letter with the names of the officers to the Ministry of Finance, which signed the request, and in turn submitted it to the caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati.

Mikati invoked the absence of sectarian balance and refused to sign unless a Sunni officer is included.
