Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed his regret at the “showy way in which sensitive judicial files related to monetary stability in the country are being handled, which exposes the country to an ominous shock.”
Mikati considered that raiding the Central Bank of Lebanon (BDL) the way it was conducted today, amid the overlapping of powers between judicial bodies, is not the appropriate solution to address the file of the Governor of BDL, Riad Salameh.
He said: “We are not attached to anyone, nor do we defend anyone, but rather we adhere to a just judiciary away from discretion while taking care of Lebanon’s financial reputation internationally.”
Mikati wishes that this file should be dealt with by a prior agreement on a new governor for BDL so the case takes its legal course afterward.
