Amin Salam, the current Lebanese caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade, announced on Sunday that flour will no longer be subsidized in the near future.

According to Salam, the Lebanese government has finally reached an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to grant Lebanon a loan to import wheat.

This, however, will not be implemented till 6 to 9 months from now. In the meantime, the necessary policies will be implemented to lift subsidies from bread.

Salam added that this could raise the price of bread in Lebanon to LBP 30,000, leaving many impoverished families unable to afford this basic commodity.

However, Salam stated that ration cards will be handed out to families affected by these measures.
