Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki, an iconic figure in the world of cinema, is set to join the esteemed jury of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which is scheduled to take place from May 14 to 25.
Comprising an equal representation of four men and four women, the jury will be led by American director Greta Gerwig, renowned for her widely acclaimed film “Barbie,” which took significant success in the past year.
The unveiling of the jury members took place two weeks before the commencement of the Palme d’Or competition. Among the distinguished personalities selected is French actor Omar Sy, reflecting a convergence of notable figures from the global and cinematic landscape.
Nadine Labaki’s association with Cannes dates back to 2004 when she started writing and developing her debut feature, “Caramel,” during her residency at the Cine Foundation.
Subsequently, she showcased the film at the Director’s Fortnight in 2007. Her subsequent works, “Where Do We Go Now?” in 2011 and “Capernaum” in 2018, also made their debut at Cannes, garnering increasing recognition with each successive entry.
This appointment marks Labaki’s second stint on a Cannes jury, following her role as the president of the Un Certain Regard jury in 2018, thus solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the festival’s history.
