The 2022 New York Festivals TV & Film Awards received entries from tens of countries from around the world in 14 Category Groups, including films, news programs, documentaries, and more.
Since 1957, the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards have been rewarding the best films and television content, ranging from big international broadcasters to emerging talents in the TV and Film industry.
Along with shortlisted documentaries from different countries, TRT World’s documentary “Lebanon, Between Two Evils”, received a finalist certificate in the Documentary category, for National Affairs and Social Issues.
The documentary looks at the increase of violence in Lebanon as the result of poverty, which is claimed to build a “perfect scenario” for gangs.
The part of the TRT World’s “Off the Grid” series meets and talks with the people who are part of the “mafias”.
“Lebanon, Between Two Evils” explores how Lebanon, which was once described as the Switzerland of the Middle East, now lacks necessities for survival.
The documentary also focuses on how the war in Syria has only made the situation in Lebanon way worse.
“But one commodity is widely available: weapons. We explore how the rise of poverty has led to a surge in violence in a country where life is becoming harder by the day,” TRT World said about the documentary.
You can watch “Lebanon, Between Two Evils” below where you can hear who seems to be an arms seller saying, “Everybody is buying. There is no house in Lebanon without weapons.”
“Even respectable businessmen and rich people come to buy weapons,” he added.
It is an alarming statement that reflects that this is not just a gang-forming situation due to poverty but more about the fear and instability that dwell among the people in the country ravaged by crises, misgovernance, and political tension.
