This Lebanese Nobel Prize candidate just passed away

The poet was a Nobel prize candidate in 2015.

It is with great grief that we say goodbye to one of the most renowned Lebanese philosopher and poet Maurice Awwad.

Death has claimed the life of one of the pioneers of public poetry in Lebanon last Sunday.

Awwad was born on February 20, 1934 in Bassalim in the Metn area. He was influenced in his beginnings by big names in Lebanese poetry such as Said Akel and Michel Trad.

He has written hundreds of poems, plays, and novels. Many of which have been translated to French, Italian and Polish.

Sabah's famous song "Al'aa Kbiri" was written by the author alongside many other successful tracks. He even wrote speeches and texts for parties during the Lebanese civil war of 1975.

In 2015, he was appointed as a candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature after the nomination committee of the Swedish Academy responsible for these awards approved his appointment.

Lebanon is proud of Maurice Awwad's work. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and may his soul rest in peace.
