First successful uterus transplant in the MENA region was completed in Lebanon!

It is estimated that in the MENA region and Turkey, 100,000 women have Uterine Factor Infertility.

A team of doctors from Lebanon and Sweden successfully completed the first uterus transplant in Lebanon on June 11, according to a source. The operation was performed at Bellevue Medical Center (BMC) in Mansourieh.

The patient is a 26-year-old Jordanian woman who suffers from uterine factor infertility which results from either an abnormality of the uterus or a complete lack of the uterus. The patient received her new uterus from her 50-year-old mother.

It is the first time that this operation is performed in Lebanon. The patient is doing extremely well. She had a normal menstrual period since the transplant which is a sign of success. The donor's operation took 12 hours, while the recipient's procedure took 6 hours.

BMC partnered with the University of Gothenburg in Sweden for this operation. This university began research on the subject in 1999 and performed trials on humans and animals. Thanks to this medical team, twelve children have been born as a result of the trial.

Dr. Randa Akouri, a Lebanese-Swedish obstetrician-gynecologist, is a part of the Swedish team of researchers. She participated in the operation at BMC. Dr. Akouri believes it is essential to launch a center for this operation in the Middle East.

This trial was performed in the region twice: once in Saudi Arabia and once in Turkey. However, the attempts were not successful.

It is estimated that in the MENA region and Turkey, 100,000 women have Uterine Factor Infertility.

This success gives hope to women who want to become mothers but are not able to become pregnant. That's a notable moment in the history of the Lebanese medicine which will put Lebanon on the international map.
