In a press conference held at the Grand Serail, the Minister Of Public Health, Dr. Firass Abiad communicated that the ministry recorded 3,150 new cases of Covid-19 out of 26,000 PCR tests. He warned that the Omicron variant is spreading in Lebanon at an increasing rate.
He warned that most of those infected are people younger than 50 years old and 65% of those infected are not vaccinated. He also shared that no decision was taken yet regarding a future lockdown.
The Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Bassam Mawlawi, said that he counts on people’s awareness to ease the spread of Covid-19 in order to avoid a full lockdown.
His ministry will issue a decision to take more health procedures in public places to limit the spread of the virus.
Regarding New year’s Eve events, Mawlawi said that the security forces will be in contact with the owners of each place to ensure that each one has a maximum of 50% capacity.
He also informed that if any of these places violate the health measures, security forces are instructed to evacuate their guests and impose a fine.
People planning to celebrate NYE in restaurants and venues should be vaccinated and take precautions. Those who are not vaccinated yet will be asked by these places to take a PCR test.
