During a consultative ministerial meeting at the Grand Serial, Lebanese Prime Minister and Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of Lebanese law on all refugees and firmness in addressing cases that violate these laws.
Mawlawi highlighted that out of the two million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, only 300,000 possess residency permits, while 800,000 are registered, leaving 1.2 million unregistered.
He also pointed out that the recent killing of Lebanese Forces official Pascal Sleiman by a group of Syrian Nationals underscored the necessity of limiting the influx of refugees from neighboring Syria.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, urged his government members to enhance the enforcement of Lebanese laws on all Syrian refugees in Lebanon, citing an increase in crimes committed by some refugees.
Mikati called for Lebanon to adopt a unified stance towards the international community regarding Syrian refugees and their impact on various aspects of Lebanese society, including economic, social, security, and sovereignty concerns, as reported by the Lebanese National News Agency.
