In a shameful act of repression, Lebanese authorities were ordered to shut down a demonstration led by the families of the victims of the Beirut Port explosion.

The families were demonstrating in front of the house of investigative Judge Fadi Sawan demanding that he pursues his investigation into the tragic explosion that left 200 dead and thousands injured.

The investigation, which was initially supposed to take 5 days, has not produced real results in almost 6 months since the disaster.

As officials, including the sitting President, Michel Aoun, knew about the dangerous ammonium nitrate stored at the Beirut Port, the blast could have been prevented had the government been duly alert.

Half a year cannot silence the pain of families who have lost their loved ones in the disaster. However, oppression by the state’s authorities is attempting to cut out the lights on justice.
