The Lebanese authorities have identified a potential threat of terrorist attacks against Russian diplomats in Lebanon, Al-Akhbar reported on Tuesday.

The Lebanese Interior Ministry has shared information with Lebanese security apparatus about the possibility of attacks on the Russian diplomats in Lebanon by Jabhat Al-Nusra, according to the newspaper.

The information was shared in a letter in May, addressed to the Defense Ministry, the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces, and the General Directorate of General Security.

The letter indicates that one of the Interior Ministry’s security apparatus had received information about “the intention of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, formerly known as Jabhat Al-Nusra, to carry out attacks on Russian interests in the region, especially in Syria and Lebanon.”

The terrorist group’s potential plans include “targeting Russian diplomatic corps, either by kidnapping, assassination, or carrying out attacks with explosives,” according to the letter cited by Al-Akhbar.

“There is a fear of this, especially since Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham has cells affiliated with it and are spread in the [refugee] camps in several areas, especially in Beirut and the north,” the Interior Ministry notes in the letter, requesting that it be forwarded to the Russian Embassy.
