The Ministry of Health terminated its contracts with the Santa Maria hospital and center and shut down both its branches in Halat and Annaya, Minister Firas Al-Abyad announced on Friday.

The ministry revoked the license of the hospitals and of two medical supervisors on the premise of neglect.

This comes after videos from inside the hospital in Annaya showed the horrible conditions the patients were living in.

Besides the poor hygiene they were kept in, over 70 patients were malnourished, and 5 had already died.

Public outrage sparked as the Lebanese media spread the news to let the struggle of these patients reach the responsible ministries.

Following that, the patients were transferred to another hospital and the Health Ministry launched an investigation to find out those responsible and the reasons why these patients were neglected.

The Santa Maria hospital was home for old people and individuals with mental illnesses.
