Bechara Boutros Rahi, the Maronite Patriarch, recently spoke from Rome, urging Lebanon’s political leaders to fulfill their responsibilities.
He lamented how Lebanon’s core values are being eroded by corruption, factional interests, and external loyalties. Rahi highlighted the ongoing presidential election deadlock as a glaring example.
The Patriarch also criticized the international community for its approach towards Lebanon’s Syrian refugee crisis.
He revealed that the crisis has cost Lebanon nearly $50 billion since the Syrian war began. Of this, the international community has contributed only $12 billion, leaving Lebanon to bear the brunt of the remaining costs.
Rahi called for an end to this injustice and for the safe return of displaced Syrians. He also commended the Lebanese army for its sacrifices in maintaining peace and security.
