A man by the name of Hassan Al-Hussein broke into the Ouzai police station in Beirut on Tuesday, February 11th, and killed the police station captain and wounded two other soldiers, and causing detainees to escape.
The fatal shooting resulted in the martyrdom of Captain Jalal Shreif after he was shot in his neck, while the other two soldiers are still being hospitalized.
Sources have confirmed that the shooter, who killed himself at the scene, was the brother of one of the detainees at the Ouzai police station.
According to official sources, he got into a fight inside the station, prompting the officers to intervene, which resulted in the casualties among the police officers.
The stories of what exactly led to the shooting differ but sources have indicated that the shooter had mental health issues, and was priorly admitted to a mental hospital. An official statement about the details of the incident has not been revealed by the ISF, as of this moment.
Information indicated that thirty detainees took advantage of this incident to flee to an unknown destination. Nonetheless, the Lebanese army was able to arrest some of them, as of the time of writing.
Captain Shreif’s father, Brig. Ali Shreif, was speculated to have suffered a cardiac arrest upon hearing the news of his son’s death.
However, relatives close to the father denied these allegations and confirmed that he is in good health, resting in his home.
Minister Akra announced that efforts are now being “focused on controlling the outlaws and those who tampered with laws, whether in Hermel or Beirut.”
Named Major after his death in the line of duty, martyr Jalal Al-Shreif was numerous times honored with medals and recognitions for his bravery and patriotism. He leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.
