The US embassy in Lebanon has released a video addressing misconceptions about the acceptance of old or worn-off US dollar bills.

According to the embassy, security features in older-design Federal Reserve notes remain effective and no one has the right to decline these bills.

Despite this, it is not uncommon for old or slightly torn dollar bills to be rejected at stores or exchangers, or accepted at a discount at the discretion of the person willing to accept it.

Abroad, bills that are at least 50% intact can be submitted to the Mutilated Currency Division of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, where they will be reviewed by experts.

If at least three-quarters of a bill is intact, it can be exchanged for a whole bill.
