A politician and senior official in Lebanon’s Central Bank (BDL), Youssef Khalil is Director of Financial Operations at BDL and the President of the Lebanese Micro-Finance Association (LMFA).
He is known to be close to the BDL’s governor Riad Salameh, and to be the “architect” of BDL’s financial engineering.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Center for Studies and Research on International Development “CERDI” in France.
He also obtained a Master’s degree in Economic Development from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the American University of Beirut (AUB).
He joined AUB in 1989 as a professor, his teaching career covering development studies, managerial economics, growth theories, and economic history.
Youssef Khalil is the nephew of former Minister Ali El-Khalil. He was selected by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, head of the Amal Movement, for the position of Minister of Finance in the newly-formed government of PM Najib Mikati.
