Zahle has taken a significant step towards sustainable public transport by introducing four hybrid electric buses.
This initiative is part of the “Promoting Environment-Friendly Public Transport” project, launched in Zahl-Al-Muallaqa and Taanayel with support from the European Union.
Funded by the EU with a grant of EUR 1.2 million, the project is managed by the Economic and Social Fund for Development (ESFD).
The project’s launch was marked by a collaborative meeting at the municipal offices, attended by EU Ambassador Sandra De Waele, ESFD Managing Director Haitham Omar, his team, and Assaad Zgheib, President of Zahle-Al-Muallaqa and Taanayel Municipality, along with other council members.
Mr. Zgheib expressed during the launch “his gratitude for the EU for their funding and diligent oversight”. He explained the detailed bus routes, stations, operational processes, and maintenance plans, all under the careful supervision of Zahle Municipality.
He also praised the ESFD’s proactive approach in addressing environmental protection and climate change concerns, noting that “the decision to introduce these environmentally friendly buses came after high pollution levels were detected in the city”.
He emphasized that “this initiative would significantly reduce pollution and the cost burden of land transportation, which has skyrocketed 15-fold in less than two years due to the ongoing economic crisis”.
During the event, EU Ambassador Sandra De Waele stated: “I am happy to be inaugurating this green and sustainable initiative in Zahle. It will reduce air pollution and improve public transport for all”.
She hoped that “it will serve as a model for other urban and congested areas across Lebanon, particularly with its environmental, economic, and health benefits”.
The rides will be free for senior citizens, individuals with special needs, and children under ten. Students will receive a 50 percent discount on fares.
The project not only provides Zahle Municipality with these hybrid buses but also includes technical support to ensure their smooth operation and management.
