Around 1:30 am on Tuesday, an explosion occurred in the town of Benafoul, east of Sidon, South Lebanon, causing extensive damage and triggering panic and chaos.
Confusion is still reigning as to which building exploded, considering the destruction of the headquarters of the Al-Resala Health Ambulance Association, and the Amal-affiliated Islamic Scouts’ center. The municipality building has also incurred major damages.
However, according to local posts on social media, a fire ignited in Al-Resala center causing the explosion of 12 oxygen bottles and bringing the entire center to the ground, and major destruction around it.
As of the time of writing, seven people were reported injured and one killed; an Amal member by the name of Ali Toufic Al Rez.
The Lebanese army has imposed a security cordon around the area of the explosion while the Lebanese civil defense continues to search the rubbles at the scene.
